Adelina's Google Doodle

GOOGLE DOODLE
A Google Doodle celebrating Adelina Gutiérrez Alonso 95th birthday.

Launched the 27th of May, 2020 this doodle celebrates the 95th birthday of a luminary ambassador of the southern night sky: Chilean astrophysicist, author, and professor Adelina Gutiérrez Alonso. Light-years ahead of her time, she was the first Chilean to earn a doctorate in astrophysics, a pioneer not only in her field, but also for women scientists around the world.
Process

The first sketches were a little crude but i was trying to came up with a simple but honest idea. It is always hard to find the balance between a clever idea and a honest representation of the people you are trying to portrait.

The first one was more about the work and research that she did and the second one was aiming at her spirit. Happily the art direction was really helpful in guiding me in taking the right decisions :-)

Then I clean up the sketches, look for a nice color palette that integrate the Google colors and add some little details to make a bit more special. I referenced the Chilean National Observatory and I though it would be cool to add the Souther Cross as the E just as an extra but finally was change in favor of readability.
The last thing was the shouting star, a nod to the wünelfe – the eight pointed star in the Mapuche iconography –.
Please check the brief Q&A I did for the Google Doodle website with more info about Adelina and I.
Big thanks to Adelina's family, the Google team and the amazing AD Lydia Nichols.
